FROM AUTHOR'S PREFACE:

This text has had a very confusing origin. In fact it began as a biography of an obscure friend of mine. I agreed to do the job out of friendly obligation. After I had written some fifty pages, this friend of mine, a highly unstable personality, backed out of the biography venture and suggested that it be recast as an autobiography, allegedly written by himself. The title cockroach man should not be taken literally to anticipate any mysterious transformation of a man in to a cockroach or the reverse. The sub-title is meant to indicate my authorial uncertainty and ambiguity of identity. My mother tongue is, of course, not English, but my competence in my actual mother-tongue, Kannada, was steadily and systematically eroded India and thus being seduced by the magic and music of what I thought was English language.

I, therefore, dedicate this text also to Bharata Muni, the aesthetic law-giver of India and his faithful modern followers, the Bollywood Directors like Prakash Mehra and others.

I must, finally, warn the readers that it is strictly a work of fiction and imagination, and that any similarity between the persons and events in its universe and the parallel real world should be regarded as purely and the irrevocably coincidental and unintentional.
