English Translation from the Hindi original of two narratives titled: Sadiyon Se and Nishkavach by an acclaimed fiction writer in Hindi.

The securities we so revel in - - our knowledge of ourselves, the measure we have of people, even the life we live - are shown up as fragile in the circumstances in which the young protagonists of these twin narratives find themselves. Vishaal cannot comprehend how little it has taken to fell the seemingly invincible Basu; the expatriate in the second story grapples with his own schisms when thrown into an alien culture. The memories that sustain us, often turn burdensome. Wisdom, perhaps, is the price we pay for the loss of innocence.

TRANSLATOR: Raji Narasimhan (1930) who writes in English, was a journalist before she turned to creative writing in her late sixties. A work of literary criticism, and the second of her four novels Forever Free, are set texts in Indian universities. Her short stories have been translated into German and Gujrati.
