ABOUT THE ARTIST
Few would surpass Pandit Kumar Gandharva in the filed of experiments and innovation if we look at the history of Indian Classical Musicians since 1950.
Kumar Gandharva’s creative genius was not restricted to presenting traditional melodies in a new form. He discovered new raga forms from the traditional folk-tunes of Malva in the central provinces. He wrote new lyrics with a poet’s sensitivity to bring out the essence of these raga forms. Along with the traditional and classical forms, he also explored the fields of folk music, devotional music, stage music and lyrics. He presented programmes like Geet Varsha, Geet-Hemant and Geet-Vasant based on Iyrics related to seasons. He approached saint-poets like Kabir, Soordas, Meera, Tulsidas and Marathi saint-poet Tukaram. He presented a separate programme on Thumri Tappa and Tarana. Everything that was Music of inspired music was dear to him. Creative effort of this scale is indeed astounding!
