Description

This book seeks to assess the foreign policy of Pakistan till the end of the Zia regime In the past few years religion has been used by some states to promote their foreign policy objectives. Islam has acquired a prominence in this regard, which is both fascinating and frightening.

The most interesting use of Islam has been made in Pakistan over the years. This work makes an attempt to tell that story with objectivity. The narration commences with the pre-independence foreign policy posturing of the Muslim League, which was conditioned by the external events like the Khilafat movement. The Muslim League used the Khilafat movement and other Islam-related events abroad to assert its Islamic identity, which was basis of demand for separate statehood. Mahatma Gandhi and his followers used the same events to promote the secular identity of the Congress party in India.

Pakistan has used Islam to cement ties with Muslim as well as non-Muslim countries. This work makes an attempt to tell the story with objectivity.
