Description
National Security: A Primer is an introductory book to the varied subjects and topics that are associated with national security. This book has five parts. Each part has one or more topics.
PART I: POLITICO MILITARY ISSUES
Military strategy is the pivotal subject for those concerned directly or indirectly with security studies. Training and education on strategy, thus, is a topic that needs to be addressed.
Do we lack creative and originality? This has been covered as a function of good teachers. The younger generation is the target to be nurtured.
After each surprise, whether strategic or tactical, nations inquire, soul-search and study the causes of it. Pakistani intrusion at Kargil in 1999 is one such event which makes one ponder on some important issues.
PART II: NUCLEAR ISSUES
The discourse on nuclear deterrence and strategy grew with, and ended with the cold war. Now it is in the second stage of rebirth in South Asia. Issues of nuclear deterrence and strategy need to be related to the draft nuclear doctrine in the early 21st century.
PART III: ECONOMICS
Logistics and economics are closely interrelated. Both the economist and strategist need to study it in the complex process of evolution of defence budget and strategy.
PART IV: SOCIETAL ISSUES
Societal Security may appear to be a recent addition to the list of topics, but it has roots which go a back to ancient history. India’s rich and diverse heritage and culture is a source of strength. This strength needs to be consolidated.
