Description

Set in an imaginary place somewhere in America, this is the story of a man named Trader Jim who comes as a stranger to the village of Chief Longhooknose of the Nojos, a Red Indian tribe. Through a game of poker, he and the Chief become friends.

Living with the Nojos, Jim eventually comes to understand, respect and love them. He adopts their customs and learns to share his world equally with animals, spirits, human beings and gods - who form an important part of Nojos's existence. However, this world is not perfect and like everyone else, they too have their share of unhappiness caused by death, avarice, hate and deception. But they face these challenges courageously, never losing their zest for life, or their great sense of humor. Although written for young readers, this is a story which transcends age barriers to appeal equally to adults.
