Description

This is a fine and well-researched piece of work on a thinker important in his own time but gravely neglected since, Dr Solomon Victus has done an impressive amount of research, This work is particularly valuable because of the neglect into which J C Kumarappa has fallen.

As Dr Victus points out, Kumarappa was multiple outsider, he was not orthodox enough as a Christian, or as a Gandhian, or as an economist, and hence has been unfairly ignored in the historiography of those three fields. Dr Victus makes the case very well that in each of these fields he made important and perhaps even pioneering contributions.

By stressing the ethical and democratic aspects of Kumarappa’s faith, Dr Victus restores him to his rightful place in Indian Christian Theology. By showing how he elaborated and expanded the Mahatma’s ideas on a village-centred economic order, Dr Victus persuades us of Kumarappa’s importance as a Gandhian thinker. By focusing on the ecological and more aspects of his economics, Dr Victus shows that Kumarappa must be considered a precocious pioneer in that branch of academic study.
