Description

Since it was founded in 1948, the Delhi School of Economics has produced among the finest economists and sociologists in India, several of whom have also achieved international acclaim for their work in those disciplines. This book comprises thirty-one essays by former teachers and students of what is affectionately called the D School. The contributors were asked to reflect upon their years in the D School with a view to achieving, via personal recollections, an informal and piecemeal history of a rather unique Indian institution.

These memoirs and reflections together form a rich collage which shows how the institution was set up; how it evolved; who its most luminous and memorable personalities were; what its courses and teaching standards were like; how its library and coffee house functioned; what its general ambience was like; what were its notable successes, constraints and failures; and whether it functioned academically and pedagogically in the manner it was meant to. Several of the contributors to this volume are academics; some have been visiting luminaries; others are from very diverse walks of life, such as journalism, the media, and the bureaucracy. An effort at showing chronological development and change has been made by choosing a spread of contributors who were at the seventies, the eighties and the early nineties.

This book will interest economists, sociologists, and all who have been associated in any way with the Delhi School of Economics. It also makes absorbing reading for students of economics and general readers.
