Emanating from Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s interest in Sufism, as expressed in his essay Sarmad Shaheed, an international seminar on Sufism was organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations , which attracted scholars from seventeen countries who contributed fifty papers during the three-day deliberations. This book is a compendium of the presentations.
The book is divided into three sections: 1. Sufism: History and Philosophy 2. Sufism and the Arts 3. Contemporary Relevance of Sufism. Fourteen papers, which have been slotted into the three parts, are the completed texts, while the remaining thirty six are summarized in a separate section.
The articles cover all aspects of Sufism from the deeply philosophical to the essentials of Sufi practice. Several articles on the genesis of Sufism in India cover the movement as it spread from coast to coast, winning people by its creed of love and service to humanity. The practice of Sufism in other parts of the world forms the subject of several other presentations.

SYED SAIYIDAIN HAMEED is the editor of India’s Maulana, in four volumes, written to commemorate the birth centenary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. She has translated and edited Rubaiyat of Sarmad including Azad’s essay Sarmad Shaheed. She is currently a member of National Commission for Women.
