Ever since the dawn of civilization on earth several Gods and Goddesses had been dominating over the Indian religious horizon from time to time in the past. While some of them faded out in oblivion after the short period, there were others who dominated the Indian religious scene and the minds of the people for a long time. But still there were certain divinities, claiming sometimes their origin from the Vedic age continued to dominate the mind of the people for centuries and have even traveled to the modern times.
Though there is a vast literature of ancient times which highlights the life of Krsna in various ways, but the earliest archaeological evidence about Krsna in the from of Vasudeva is available in the form of a Harappan seal depicting the scene of Yamalarjuna followed by an inscribed pillar commonly known as Garudadhvaja at Besnagar near Vidisha. Incidentally it may be added here that this pillar was not erected by an Indian, but a foreigner named Heliodorus, an ambassador to India.
Krsna has been popularly known as the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, and his popularity is still the living faith with the masses. The question of the incarnation of Vishnu has been variously discussed in the Puranas which hold different views on the subject, but by and large, it is agreed to his having the ten incarnations who appeared on earth from time to time in the past.
It would be evident that Krsna had been dominating the Indian religious scene from time immemorial and has continued to do so even to the present day. His life scenes can be found in not only different texts and the Indian plastic art, but could be found in the countries beyond India.
