Description

Bharthari is a folk-epic with its own traditions spread over several states of central and western India and is sung in numerous regional versions. Published under the series Indian Literature in Tribal languages, this version as documented by Dr. Nandkishore Tiwari is found in Chhattisgarh.

There is an amazing body of oral literary works in all Indian languages. The oral literary traditions exist side by side with the traditions of written literature in the main languages. Most of the tribal languages have literature only in oral form. The need to undertake a systematic documentation and dissemination of the literary works in tribal languages as well as in oral form in the main languages can hardly be overemphasized.

The Sahitya Akademi has established for this purpose the project of publishing Indian literature in tribal languages and in oral traditions.
