Description

Explorations in the History of South Asia assembles a wide-ranging collection of articles written in honour of one of the outstanding historians of India. Dietmar Rothermund. The essays reflect the span of Rothermund’s academic productivity.

The first part which is dedicated to India’s foreign relations, not only with Germany, but also with her neighbors in the Indian Ocean, is followed by a close look at the relationship between states, courts and religion in premodern contexts. The third part contains articles on India’s colonial experience, while the fourth focuses on developments of the post-colonial states, tackling questions of identity, nationhood and political movements.

Dietmar rothermund has for 33 years (until his final retirement in February 2001) taught South Asian History at the South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University. A prolific author, he has an impressive list of works running into more than 60 pages and including 20 monographs, to his credit. Published in German and English, his books have been translated into Bengali, Telugu, Italian, Turkish and Chinese. His most recent publications are The Role of the State in South Asia and Other Essays and Mahatma Gandhi: An Essay in Political Biography. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Great Britain and was awarded the Hemchandra Raychaudhury Gold medal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal (1994).
