Description
The purpose of this book is to make available to the students, scholars and teachers music the basic principles and concepts, processes and steps, tools and methods, alternative designs and approaches for research that have been developed in related fields and are relevant for empirical research in music. Further, the aim is to focus on special characteristics of knowledge in Indian music and the methods that are especially suited for research in the field.
Music, being a performing art, is often perceived as a field of study in which there is a greater emphasis on the development of skills and practice as compared to the theory. However, there is an emerging trend in most of the institutions of higher learning in music to introduce courses in research methodology in the post-graduate programmes, requirement of doctoral level research for teachers, and to encourage more empirical research in music.
There is a growing literature in the field of the art of music and musicology which is exploring the rich cultural heritage of Indian music and analyzing the relationship of Indian music with the other systems of music. All such studies require sound research methods for good quality empirical work and the development of knowledge in the field.
This work is an attempt to fill the gap in literature on research methodology in the field of Indian music.
