First published in 1959, Parties and Politics at the Mughal Court, 1707–1740 is Satish Chandra’s influential study of the political and institutional forces that shaped the Mughal Empire after the death of Aurangzeb.

Drawing upon court records, correspondence and previously underused historical sources, Chandra examines factional struggles within the Mughal nobility, the changing authority of the wazir and the breakdown of the jagirdari system. He connects these developments to a broader social and political crisis that weakened the empire’s central authority.

The study also considers the Sayyid Brothers, Nizam-ul-Mulk, the expansion of the Marathas and Jats, the conquest of Malwa and Bundelkhand, and the political circumstances surrounding Nadir Shah’s invasion. A new preface to this fourth edition reassesses the causes of Mughal decline in light of subsequent scholarship.
