Description

This book presents the story of Spain during Islamic reign and covers the entire period from Tariq's landing in Spain to the expulsion of the Muslims in the first decade of the 17th century.

In 1820-21 Dr. Conde, Spain's first Arabist wrote a history of the period using Arabic sources, but his book stopped at the fall of the Kingdom of Granada in the 15th century. Lane-Poole's brief history appeared in 1886, and went through a dozen editions. S P Scott's History of the Moorish Empire in Europe was published in Philadelphia in 1904. These books are now out of print.

The scientific study of Muslim Spain was undertaken by the Dutch orientalist R Dozy. His books are still relevant. In more recent time, the French Orientalist, levi Provencal planned to write a complete history in six volumes. But he died after completing third volume of his book. Both Dozy and Provencal did not go beyond the fall of the Umayyad kingdom.

The present volume covers the entire period from Tariq's landing in Spain to the expulsion of the Muslims in the first decade of the 17th century. Part II of the book deals with the fascinating subject of Hispano-Muslim culture.
