It aims to familiarize the reader not only with the names of these beautiful trees but also with their history, cultivation and uses. It will be useful to nature-lovers not only in India but in the tropics in general.
The book consists of revised and partly rewritten articles which originally appeared in the ‘Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society’, volume 33 (1929) to 39 (1936). It was first published in 1937, and this second edition is more than a reprint of that work. Many additions and corrections have been made to the notes on the meaning, history and derivation of the plant names, especially those relating to ‘Delonix, Kleinhovia’ and ‘Salmalia’. This edition is further enriched by descriptions of the botanical families, a key to the genera, a short glossary and a short bibliography. Changes in nomenclature have been made in accordance with the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.
