The Unknown Hsuan-Tsang illuminates a comparatively neglected period in the life of the celebrated seventh-century Buddhist monk, scholar and translator Xuanzang, traditionally known as Hsuan-Tsang. While his journey through India is extensively documented, considerably less is generally known about his work following his return to China in AD 645.

Drawing upon Chinese and Uigur sources, D. Devahuti brings together translated biographical materials, correspondence and historical accounts concerning Hsuan-Tsang’s later life and intellectual contributions. The volume includes selections from Chinese and Uigur versions of his life, his correspondence with Prajna-Deva and Jnana-Prabha, and a résumé of chapters from Stanislas Julien’s French account.

The book also presents material from the Records of the Western Lands of the Great Tang Period, including a general description of India and an account of Kanyakubja. An extensive appendix inventories the Buddhist texts translated by Hsuan-Tsang and preserved in the Korean Tripitaka, arranged both chronologically and alphabetically.
