Description

Issues of nation and nation-state have hitherto been dealt with mainly by political scientists. This volume breaks new ground by bringing a sociological perspective to this very important area of inquiry.

Our concepts of nation-state have been derived mainly from the west. However, the experience of the rest of the world is different from the western experience. South Asia in particular provides a fascinating case for the study of nation and national identity, for testing existing formulations, and generating new ones.

This book brings together papers by eminent scholars, which were first presented at the 25th All India Sociological Conference. The essays seek to conceptualize the experiences of nation formation and de-formation in South Asia and considers issues such as the concept of the nation-state; the question of nation-building in India in relation to language, region, tribe, religion, caste and gender; nation-building in other parts of south Asia; and the concept of civil society and its relationship to the state.
