This study is an attempt to understand phonological development of children. This presents descriptive account of the development of phonology and early lexicon on two children who acquired Tamil and Telugu simultaneously.
Besides introduction, the book has four chapters. In 'Phonology', the two children's phonological development during the first six months of their speeches is discussed spelling out the word level strategies and processes characteristic of this period.
The next chapter gives an account of their phonological development beyond this stage, focusing on the complex stages through which Tamil and Telugu phonemes passed in their speech before attaining adult norms. In 'Bilingual Lexicon' the nature of the children's lexicon is examined in the light of the controversy namely unified vs. bifurcated systems. The major findings of the study are compared with other such studies in the last chapter.
The book will be useful not only in the study of language acquisition but also for pedagogical and clinical purposes.
