Description

The paintings in the present portfolio illustrate some varying interesting aspects of the Rajasthani and Pahari Schools alongside their undoubted aesthetic charms.

The Imperial Mughal atelier, in its various stages, considerably influenced the origins and development of both the Rajasthani and Pahari Schools of miniature painting.

The beginnings of the Rajasthani School of painting are almost contemporaneous with those of the Popular Mughal idiom which influenced it in several respects. The earliest known Rajasthani paintings are first seen at Mewar from about AD 1597-1600 and thereafter the style also spread to other states in Rajasthan.

These early Rajasthani paintings were largely illustrations to works like the 'Bhagavata-Purana', the 'Gita Govinda', the 'Ramayana' etc.
