Description

“In the realm of religion and ethics (dharma), of material progress and prosperity (artha), of the enjoyment of the pleasures of personal and social life (kama), and of spiritual emancipation (moksa), whatever is embodied in this epic may be found elsewhere; but what is not found is the epic, it will be impossible to find anywhere else.”

This volume contains the papers presented at the International Seminar on the Mahabharata organized by the Sahitya Akademi at New Delhi on 17-20 February, 1987. The themes discussed at the seminar were: (1) The Mahabharata: Structure: Organic growth of the oral tradition: Place of legends; (2) The Mahabharata as an epic of being and becoming - the totality of life; (3) The socio-cultural milieu of the Mahabharata; the Mahabharata as an epic of universality and human concern; (4) The Mahabharata in arts and culture in India and abroad; (5) The impact of the Mahabharata on later writers in India and abroad; and (6) the attitude of modern creative writers towards the Mahabharata.
