Broadly speaking the material for the present study fall under two heads; Literary and Archaeological. Archaeological evidence consists mainly of the ruins of the old towns and forts, paintings, coins inscriptions. The literary source is the two epics - Ramayana and Mahabharata some Greek, Graeco-Roman and Chinese literature.
