Ilisha Amagi Mahao (The Taste of an Hilsa), a collection of short stories, was first published in 1973 and the very next year it was given the Sahitya Akademi award in Manipuri.
The stories deal with undesirable but enforced physical and mental environment of the middle class people. Some of the stories depict the unwilling human compromise with the present social system and at the same time find out the latent reasons behind the corruption and bribery.

Thounaojam Ratankumar Singh (b.1958) is presently Professor and Head, Department of English, Manipur University. His publications include Lapsus Calami (poem / 1984), Ezra Pound and Imagist Poetry (Criticism / 2005) etc.
