Description

As per convention since the 13th Session of the Punjab History Conference, the theme selected was Martyrdom and the Sikhs: Concept and Tradition. The focus was to explore how the concept of ‘martyrdom’ was introduced to the Sikhs; its meaning and understanding by the early Sikhs; the process of percolation of this understanding and future historical developments; relationship between the religious and non-religious or secular martyrdom; involvement by different social categories and groups alongwith the popular and state responses; the issue of gender and martyrdom; and lastly, the contemporary perception of the concept of martyrdom vis-à-vis the Sikhs and the state along with the socio-cultural and political implications of this tradition.

It is indeed satisfying that out of total 118 papers presented, 28 are related to the theme, both in Punjabi and English Languages.

The session was presided over by Professor Mushirul Hasan, eminent historian and Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, and was inaugurated by Professor Harbans Mukhia, well-known scholar and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor, JNU, New Delhi. Both the scholarly treatises were well-attended and appreciated so far their contents, directions and relevance were concerned. Professor Nayanjot Lahiri of Delhi University, Delhi; Professor Sunil Kumar of Delhi University, Delhi; Professor Chhanda Chatterjee of Visav Bharti University, Santiniketan and Dr. Surjit Kaur Jolly, Principal, S.P.M. College, New Delhi, presided over the Ancient, Medieval, Modern and Punjabi sections respectively.
