Description
The nineteenth century has been a crucial period of Indian history that witnessed the transition from mediaevalism to modernism. The impact of western civilization was particularly felt in Bengal which became the focal point of this culture contact, so much so that the period came to be marked out as an era of Renaissance.
Momentous changes took place in the different facets of Bengalee life and society which gradually radiated to cover the whole of India. In order to analyse the currents and cross-currents of Renaissance movement and to assess the quantum of the interaction of its contributing forces the Council of the Asiatic Society on the recommendation of its Cultural and Scientific Advisory Committee arranged for a two-day Seminar on ‘Renascent Bengal-1817-1857’ under the chairmanship of Dr. R.C. Manjumdar.
Though for obvious reasons the scope of the study was delimited by two significant dates, 1817 and 1857, historical analysis could not be made to conform to fixed date-lines and scholars exercised their freedom in stretching it this way or that to suit their respective themes. It is a matter of gratification indeed that papers presented by eminent scholars throwing light on different aspects of the movement generated considerable interest and enthusiasm amongst academicians and enlightened public who actively took part in the deliberations.
Collected papers with a foreword by Dr. Majumdar, along with a summary of the proceedings, are now presented before the academic world.
