Description
Hero Hiralal (Naseeruddin Shah) is a simple auto-rickshaw driver smitten by films. His entire lifestyle is an imitation of cinematic illusion. He lives in a fantasy world of the screen, a bachelor, searching for the love of his life. Into the small town, a film unit arrives shaking up its routine.
As the shooting begins, crowds gather and our hero Hiralal is there. He strikes an acquaintance with a budding starlet Rupa. Rupa taken in by his simplicity is friendly with him, which Hiralal mistakenly believes to be love. When rudely awakened by reality, Hiralal decides that life may not be worth living, but why a worthless death?
With the help of Rani Sitara Devi, a publicity agent, Hiralal plans to have a grand death. Hoarding, posters, ad campaigns sprout all over, inviting one and all to watch the death of the one and only ‘Hero Hiralal’.
The day of the death show dawns. The crowds are there, there is expectancy in the air, bets are made, and rumors spread. Will he, or Won't he?
