Description

This is the complete calligraphed text of an essay commissioned by Professor Don Johnson and Jean Johnson for a volume edited by them titled The India guide: An Introduction to the Major Themes of Indian Civilization, published by the Asia Society, New York. They had wanted 4000 words but logorrhea struck when I started writing during a sojourn in the salubrious environment of the temple town of Puri in May 2001 and I soared way above the limit. The essay got transmogrified into a monograph. The Johnson-shortened version appears in the Asia Society book intended for teachers of Indian culture in American schools and colleges. This complete text may be of use to the more curious and determined among them. The still more dedicated can get additional material by contacting me at 162/92 Lake Garden.
