Description

These essays were commissioned by A.S. Raman, editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India, and published serially in that magazine in 1966. They are a tentative attempt to define the importance of “myth” in Indian literature and to trace its presence (or absence) in some of the literatures in the Indian languages I have a working knowledge of.

For the second edition, I have made minimal changes, but added substantially to the essay on Rabindranath Tagore. The excitement of exploration has its own rational and rewards, and I have refrained from attempting to excessively “improve” on the enthusiasm, relevant or misplaced, of my youth.
