Description

The two were inseparable–young Parvati and Devdas. They used to run a way from School and wander about together. Devdas was the son of the village Zamindar, Parvati the daughter of a middle-class father, living next door.

Devdas was sent to Calcutta, accompanied by the old servant Dharmdas, for education. The parting was a painful blow to both Parvati and Devdas, Years rolled by. Once when Devdas came back, their memories of childhood blossomed forth into love. Parvati’s marriage with Devdas was proposed, but Devdas’ father turned it down because Parvati’s family was socially much lower than the Zemindar’s. Parvati’s father felt insulted and in his anger fixed up her marriage with a rich widower. And one night-Parvati, brushing all considerations aside, went to Devdas all alone seek his help. But Devdas could not defy his parents. Blinded with rage and despair, Devdas left for Calcutta, without even meeting Parvati. He felt miserable and could not decide what to do. In a moment of confusion he wrote to Parvati to forget him, as he did not love her and could not marry her against the wishes of his parents. Later, mortified at the life he had written, he rushed back to the village. He met Parvati and tried to make it up with her, but Parvati was in no mood for conciliation. The letter had aroused her pride. She refused to even talk to him, and Devdas, bitterly disappointed, came back to Calcutta, but the memory of Parvati haunted him day and night. He found peace nowhere. To escape his mental torture he started drinking and on the advice of his friend Chunilal, became a regular visitor to the house of Chandramukhi – a beautiful dancing girl.
