Description
The Nobel Laureate Rabinddranath Tagore was a multi-faceted genius. He was a poet, playwright, novelist, philosopher, painter, musician and educationist. In the recent years, there has been a revival of interest in his fiction, especially the novel The Home and the World (Ghare Baire). The novel, set on a Bengali zamindar’s estate in 1908, is both love story and a novel of political awakening.
The present book, divided into three sections, has a unique framework. The first section introduces Tagore and The Home and the World, with an exhaustive commentary on the novel by the editor Dr Rama Kundu; the second section discusses the letters that appeared in various journals when the novel was published and Tagore’s response to these; the third section contains critical perspectives on the novel by eminent scholars. The book throws fresh light on The Home and the World and adds to our awareness of the intrinsic value of Indian fiction.
