Description

Gramophone Company of India is a national heritage. The company is a storehouse of some of the richest music of the early and mid 20th century in classical and film music. The pre sixties era belonged to an older world-a quaint world of rural spaces, silences, simplicity and work worship. That was thus the era of great artistic creators whose music and creativity exhibited the radiance of meditative focus, unrelenting efforts at polishing every nuance, and most of all, a devotion to art far beyond self.

The 20the century was also the era of women’s emancipation in the arts. Women broke the centuries old male hegemony and emerged to rule as celebrated superstars. Medieval and ancient music history rarely, if ever, mention names of famous women. From Gohar Jaan, Zohra Bai and Kesarbai Kerkar, the last century saw the emergence of great women leaders in music, who made Indian women proud. Saregama-HMV had the privilege to record the music of these women musicians and this set of albums brings the music of four path breaking women musicians. The grand music of Gangubai Hangal, the poetic lyricism of the revolutionary Begum Akhtar, the nectar like tones of the ragingly popular Hirabai Barodekar and the abandon of the dulcet toned Shobha Gurtu.
