This volume contains a representative selection from the papers presented at a National Seminar, and discusses 13 Novels for tracing the growth of Indian novel in English.
Although some important novels were published in the year immediately following independence, it was only in 1960s that the sensibility of the Indian writer in English crystallized into what may be called a post independence sensibility, marked by an expression of the private voice. The 1980s witnessed a further intensification of the private voice in a bid to liberate it from the shackles of social responsibility.
The thirteen Novels discussed in this book therefore represent a significant phase in the development of Indian writing in English and reflect the country's changing social, economic, political, and cultural consciousness during this period.
