It was as captain of the West Indies in 1971 that I first had the pleasure of seeing the very young Sunil Gavaskar in his debut series. In his first Test (the second of the series), he hit 65 and 67 not out as India secured the only win and captured the rubber.
The other four matches were drawn, but young Gavaskar went on to amass 774 runs with four centuries-two in the final match at Trinidad-and a series average exceeding 150.
Sunil will always stand out in my memory as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. He played against the toughest teams with some of the greatest fast bowlers and he stood the test of time for two decades, truly emphasizing the class of this great player.
