A History of Traditional Fields of Learning presents a concise history of the dissemination of traditional fields of learning in Tibet during the early and later periods of Buddhist transmission.

The book discusses the translators and scholars who travelled to Tibet, the texts translated into Tibetan, and the monasteries founded as centres of religious and intellectual study. It also examines the spread of Tibetan Buddhism and traditional Tibetan learning to China and Mongolia, including the translation of Tibetan texts into local languages.

Written by the respected Tibetan scholar Muge Samten, this work was drawn from the third volume of his collected writings. The volume includes Sangye Tandar Naga’s English translation together with the original Tibetan text. It is a valuable scholarly resource for the study of Tibetan intellectual history, Tibetan Buddhist literature, traditional systems of knowledge, translation history, and the transmission of Buddhist learning across Inner Asia.

Muge Samten was born in 1914 in Muge in southern Amdo. He began his studies at Muge Tashi Khorlo Monastery and later joined Labrang Tashikhyil Monastery, where he studied the sutras, tantras, and traditional sciences. He subsequently received the title of Geshe Dorampa and became widely known for his scholarship on Tibetan religion, culture, history, and literature. He authored six volumes and numerous articles on subjects related to Tibetan studies. He died in 1993.
