The Mahatma is a parallel account of Gandhi's days in riot-torn Noakhali in the summer of 1946. It flashes out when the sub-continent was reeling under communal riots and the Mahatma's idea of ahimsa were severely tested.

The Mahatma tries to justify his ideals by undertaking his last and most controversial experiment - the Yajna - to rid himself of any vestigial sexuality. This alone seems to him to be the answer to the doubts assailing his ideals. The Yajna, however, alienates him further from the reality of politics and religion while the nation passes about in its birth pangs.
