Description

In the prefatory remarks the editors of the second volume of the Cambridge Economic History of India (CEHoI) stated that the aim was to provide a general survey of the field of modern Indian economic history. When this project was undertaken, the editors felt, there was need for such a survey since there was no single general source that a student of Indian economic history could consult. It remains true that till today no book organized on this scale and with this aim is available. When the CEHoI was published in 1983 the demand for it was sufficient to warrant an Indian edition. The edition has been out of print for a long time.

The introduction to the new imprint of the CEHoI offers a quick overview of new research since the publication of the 1983 edition. The aim was just to indicate some major trends in research and to focus on some prominent monographs. Even this brief outline evidently sages that the readers of the CEHoI today will need to supplement this volume with other readings. That is an evidence of the growth of the discipline. Not all of the authors mentioned here call themselves economic historians.

Actually there has been, as we have seen, an expansion in the range of the discipline to such an extent that it can reclaim its earlier identity, history of the political economy in the comprehensive and classical sense of the term. This Introduction may have highlighted the work of recent years by the younger generation of scholars somewhat disproportionately; no doubt some of the new initiatives were anticipated by their precursors. And yet, when you consider the present scene you might agree that a new kind of history of the economic life of the people, interwoven with their social institutions, power relationships and cultural discourse, constitutes a promising agenda today.
