This work is the first full-length study of most aspects of Vijaynagara art, written after a personal and on-the-spot study, of its various monuments, frescoes, friezes and other art-objects throughout southern India.
The work commences with a survey of the cultural perspective of this art, followed by a thorough discussion of all the pre-Vijayanagara currents in architecture, which is dealt with in two phases: first, an analysis of its religious architecture and next, its civil, secular and military structures in the various localities of the empire.
Vijayanagara iconography is taken up for an interpretation of the imagery of its various deities Saiva, Vaisnavite, Jaina and so forth and also of the portraiture of its common people, its royalty and nobility, their ornaments, costumes and other features.
Vijayanagara sculpture is then discussed at length in most of its aspects: social, religious, their daily life, costume, jewellery, coiffures, and so forth. Ornamentation and symbolism, which played an important role in Vijayanagara art, are treated in considerable detail.
The work concludes with a study of the fine arts, other than those already discussed, namely, painting, dancing, music, threatricals, dramaturgy, their musical instruments, dancing girls, dancing teachers, dancing salons and ballets and their relevance in this art. The value of this work is enhanced by the publication of a number of relevant illustrations, and line drawings.
