Description

A selection of readings-memoiral and critical texts, manifestoes, and interviews-by/with major Latin American film personalities-directors, scriptwriters, technicians, critics-offers insights into cinema in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Cuba, countries which have moved through continuing political uncertainties and upheavals and explosion of violence, and in the midst of it all have nurtured distinctive styles of radical filmmaking.

While most of the material gathered for this volume is not easily accessible, there has been a conscious endeavour to avoid Euro-American perceptions/criticisms of the works, and to let the Latin Americans speak for themselves, often in direct encounters/dialogues with Indian critics.

There is a natural emphasis on questions of theory ad ideology, questions that have been posed, defined and redefined in the tempestuous process of filmmaking in a continuous state of siege. A lot of background information provides the required setting and framework for a fresh, objective reading of the films of directors like Birri, Littin, Alea, Sanjines, Solanas, Solas, Rocha, and dos Santos. A section of stills enriches the documentation.
