Description

The human body is at the very root of individual consciousness and it is but natural that human form, fascinates the artists' creative urge. To trace how it has been handled over any period of time by artists is an interesting study in Indian art. The human images of wooden dolls, puppets, gods and deities, forms on textiles and buildings bear testimony to this fascination, which is not without it's functionality; as toys for children, fashion textiles and palatial buildings. The artist's mind goes into abstractions as do minds of the psychologists and the spiritual seekers go into the psychic and the causal bodies.

In the Golden jubilee year of India's independence, Lalit Kala Akademi organized an exhibition on 'Human Form and Art', and this collection represents the best of figurative art in India.
