Description
In Hindustani classical music ragas are associated with the moods that they create. The particular way in which notes are played/sung create particular moods or give a feeling of a particular season, or time of the day. Certain ragas also depict certain rasa’s or emotions like Shringar Ras (Romantic), Karuna (Pathos), Raudra (Anger) etc. Certain examples of ragas that are linked with seasons are Malhar, Megh (Mansoons), Bhairav (Autumn), and Malkauns (Winter).
Similarly ragas depending on the mood they create are classified into sets that can be sung at different times of the day. For this purpose the 24-hour day has been divided into 8 prahars. Accordingly both the day and the night are each divided into four prahars or quarters with sunrise and sunset marking the dividing lines between these two halves.
Although complete agreement regarding the classification of ragas on this basis does not exist, by and large most exponents of Hindustani classical music follow these general rules. Finally there are also some ragas which can e performed at any time of the day such as mand (bilawal that) sindhura & dhani. This set of 4 albums is a collection of ragas classified into 8 prahars. Dawn, Morning, Afternoon, Late Afternoon/Early Evening, Late Evening, Night, Post Mid Night and Pre Dawn.
A string of high calibered artistes have performed the different ragas bringing out the flavour and feel of each raga and the time of the day it represents. Instruments like Flute, Shehnai, sitar & Sarod which are the main pillars of Indian music are featured in these albums. The album ends with a vocal rendition of a thumris in Raga Bhairavi which according to most is the raga which should be sung at the end of the performances.
