The Theosophical Society (TS) was founded in 1875 by Madame H P Blavatsky and Colonel H s Olcott to preserve and promote the world's spiritual heritage. Many of its leaders, however, seemed to be more fascinated with its occult, esoteric-some would say, invented-aspects than with what others would consider real spirituality as indicted by Madame Blavatsky's book The Secret Doctrine. As the attraction of eastern religions for the theosophist seemed to gather momentum, it was decided to shift the headquarters of the TS from the west to Adyar, madras, India in 1882. a year later, Charles Lead beater, who was to play a crucial role in Krishnamurti's life, joined the TS. In 1889, Mrs. Annie Besant, who would be the successor to Blavatsky followed suit. The same year Blavatsky announced that the purpose of theosophy was to prepare humanity for the coming of Lord Maitreya, world Teacher, for the Age of Aquarius.
