Description

Love Poems of Taslima Nasreen is a selection of Taslima's love poems from several books. She is internationally known as a women's rights activist and a fighter against religious fundamentalism. But in this book she speaks in a private voice - her love, longings, desire and despair.

Internationally known and widely travelled, Taslima Nasreen was born in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. She studied medicine and graduated in 1984. She worked as a gynecologist and anesthesiologist in hospitals in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. During her medical studies, she gained prominence as a strongly feminist columnist; she also began to publish poetry and fiction.

Her novel Shame was banned in Bangladesh in 1993, on the ground that its inflammatory tone excited tensions between Muslims and Hindus. In 1994, the European Parliament awarded her Sakharow Prize for Freedom of Thought. She is known for her secular, liberal outlook, attacking religious fundamentalism and prejudices. Conservative elements in Bangladesh demanded her execution some years back for blasphemy. Nasreen secretly left Bangladesh and took asylum in Sweden where she now lives. The West Bengal government recently banned her autobiography. Currently she is doing research in the USA.
