Once sage Soota, while discoursing with the other sages on the importance of Shivapurana, said, Sages! Brahmins! Reading or listening to Shivapurana brings fulfillment of all the four Purusharthas (the object of a man’s creation and existence) i. e. Dharma, Artha, Kaama and Moksha. This Purana has been considered parallel to the Vedas. Lord Shiva was the first to have composed this Purana.

There are twelve volumes of this compilation, viz. Vidyeshwarasamhita, Rudrasamhita, Vinayakasamhita, Umasamhita, Matrisamhita, Ekadasharudrasamhita, Kailasasamhita, Shatarudrasamhita, Kotirudrasamhita, Sahasrakotirudrasamhita, Vayaviyasamhita, and Dharmasamhita. These Samhitas (compilations) impart great religious merits. Brahmins! Vidyeshwarasamhita has ten thousand couplets, Rudrasamhita, Vinayakasamhita, Umasamhita and Matrisamhita contain eight thousand couplets each.
