Negotiating India’s Past brings together fifteen scholarly essays examining historical processes across early, medieval and modern India. Written by distinguished historians, the collection approaches India’s past from different regional, social and methodological perspectives while maintaining a broader understanding of historical change.
The essays are organized into three thematic sections: ideology, legitimacy and the state; environment, exchange and economic transactions; and social change and resistance. Subjects include early reports concerning the Indus Civilization, state formation and political legitimacy, Kalhana’s Kashmir, music and ideology in ancient and medieval Tamilakam, the Pindaris, environmental history, Mughal monetary systems, Banjaras and the Indian economy, early English trading practices, gender in the Grhyasutras, non-Brahmanical religious traditions, the Bhils of Mewar, smallpox in colonial Orissa, industrial labour and wartime politics in Bengal.
The volume demonstrates the range and depth of modern Indian historical scholarship by drawing upon archaeological evidence, inscriptions, texts, monetary history and colonial records. It will be particularly valuable to historians and advanced students interested in Indian historiography, social history, political formations, economic exchange and regional historical processes.
This commemorative volume honors Professor Partha Sarathi Gupta, the influential historian and teacher who served in the Department of History at the University of Delhi from 1962 until 1999.
