Poverty and Un-British Rule in India

First published in 1901, Poverty and Un-British Rule in India is a foundational work of Indian economic nationalism and one of the most influential critiques of British colonial rule.

Dadabhai Naoroji used extensive financial statistics and economic analysis to develop his celebrated Drain Theory. He argued that a substantial portion of India’s wealth and public revenue was being transferred to Britain through colonial administration, military expenditure, pensions, salaries and other payments made outside India.

Naoroji’s analysis profoundly influenced the early Indian nationalist movement and shaped later discussions of colonial exploitation, poverty and economic self-government. This government-issued hardcover edition forms part of the Publications Division’s distinguished program of preserving important works of Indian history and political thought.
