Description

This work is admittedly the first biography of Derozio, and is still praised as the most detailed and sincere attempt to tell the life story of the revered man. It speaks of Derezio the academic, critic and teacher; of the contemporary Indian press and above all Derozio's influence on his times.

Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, one of the pioneers among the makers of modern Bengal, was born to a Portuguese man and his Indian wife in Calcutta in 1809. He became a famous poet as the age of eighteen. He taught English and History at Hindu College, Calcutta, and did more to impart the idea of young India than any other personae of his times. A teacher, philosopher and poet, Derozio brought the first waves of European enlightenment into the new education system that was then taking shape.
