In a sense it is the quintessence of the thinking of Indian intellectuals from different disciplines.

The seminar was jointly organized by a number of institutions and was inspired by the eminent thinker Shri P N Haksar. Volume 1 contains the précis of nearly 80 papers presented at this five-day seminar and the interventions of a few hundred participants from all over the country. These papers are being published in the second volume.
The contemporary situation in India has been viewed by the participants from a historical perspective. Every aspect of the human condition in India has been covered in great depth: society, economy, polity, law, education, culture, communication and science and technology.
Captured in these pages is a unique experience of an intellectual exchange among academics, scientists, political and social activists, journalists, littérateurs, performing artistes, law-makers and legal luminaries, everyone, despite different perceptions and attitudes brought together by a common concern for this land of ours.
VOLUME II
The 77 papers presented at the Seminar and published here provide a comprehensive insight into the problems facing India and highlight some of the possible ways of working towards solutions. In a sense, these papers collectively represent the quintessence of the current thinking of India’s intellectuals drawn from a very wide range of disciplines.
