Author Spotlight: Eknath Easwaran

Eknath Easwaran (1910–1999) was a beloved spiritual teacher, author, and translator whose warmth, clarity, and gentle wisdom helped bring the timeless teachings of India into everyday modern life. Born in Kerala, India, he later came to the United States on the Fulbright program and went on to teach one of the first university courses on meditation at UC Berkeley.
He is especially remembered for developing Passage Meditation — a simple and deeply practical method of meditation that uses the silent repetition of inspirational passages from the world’s great spiritual traditions. Easwaran’s approach made meditation feel approachable, compassionate, and accessible to ordinary people navigating the challenges of daily life. Through his writings, translations, and the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation, he introduced generations of readers to the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, Vedanta, and the transformative power of spiritual practice. His work continues to resonate because it speaks not only to the intellect, but to the heart — offering calm, strength, and hope in a restless world.
Why We Chose Him for This Month’s Spotlight At India Club because we wanted to begin our Spotlight series with someone whose teachings feel both timeless and deeply relevant to modern life. Eknath Easwaran had a rare gift for presenting Vedanta not as abstract philosophy, but as something practical, compassionate, and profoundly human.
Part of what makes his story so inspiring is the quiet influence of his grandmother — a deeply wise and spiritual woman whom Easwaran often described as his greatest teacher and guide. Her simplicity, strength, discipline, and loving presence shaped many of the values and teachings he later shared with the world.
We were especially drawn to Easwaran’s Passage Meditation because of the way it makes meditation feel simple, welcoming, and accessible to everyone. His work opened the door for countless readers to experience the wisdom of India’s spiritual traditions in a personal and meaningful way.
Through this month’s Spotlight, we invite you to explore his life, teachings, and books — and perhaps discover a little more stillness, clarity, and inspiration along the way.
