Description

An excellent translation which gives the readers a glimpse of great Telegu poetVemana of medieval times.

More than 3,000 poems have been attributed to Vemana. Many of them are of a prosaic nature, and would be of interest only to the scholar. The editors have therefore selected about 350 which appeared to them as verses of poetic and readable quality.

Since C P Brown published the first English translation of Vemana's poems in 1829, there has not been another translation which excels his either in accuracy or comprehensiveness. Brown's translations, although reasonably accurate, were made ponderous by a style which included his gloss of a poem within the translation itself. To come closer to Vemana's concise style, the editors of this volume have done away with glossing the poem.

Frank, fearless, and forthright about all that is deceitful and false, many lines in Vemana's verses have become part of everyday speech. A true humanist, at the core of his philosophy lies man, and not God.
