As is apparent, the number of such indispensable authors is even larger for the short story than for the novel.

Not only will every discerning critic or reader have her or his personal list of bet stories, but there are the other issues of different periods and movements which must be kept in mind. In addition, there is the perennial issue of leading writers who must be included by virtue of their reputation.

It is commonly said, and this is a widely held, though not uncontested, view, that it is in the realm of the short story that modern Bengali prose fiction has had its richest flowering. As proof of this, many critics cite the sociological realism, and socio-cultural and stylistic diversity and depth to be found within this genre.

Here, it is said, is a tree with innumerable branches, from any of which one may derive pleasure, edification, and insight into the human condition. Indeed, there have been numerous writers and movements, some of which are considered later, concerned with developing some, or all, of these very features.

As such, the common critical refrain about the world of the Bengali short story, both within the commercial mainstream media as well as the less-organized, and occasionally more experimental, circle of little Hence it is imperative that important and popular fiction written in Hindi is made available to the non-Hindi speaking people at home and abroad. This anthology is the first step towards that direction.

In a vast country like India, where great regional differences in culture and behavior obtain, and the various languages retain their exclusive origins and identities, it is not possible to maintain a complete and continuous communication between different parts of the country on a national scale. There cannot be a truly meaningful awareness of the country's total literary activity and output without such intercommunication through the medium of translation. Translations of some of the better known works of Indian literary giants like Tagore, Premchand and others have been successfully undertaken and their wirings have been read and enjoyed in all parts of India. There has, however, been no systematic endeavor to take up the important works of each region and present them in a widely understood language.

Fusion Books, has planned the publication of a series of anthologies of English translations of modern short stories written in the different Indian languages, with the aim of bringing the people of India closer together and making Indian literature available in other parts of the world. However, the modern short story in Hindi largely developed in the twentieth century, when a need was felt not only to link with the past but also to find and invent new forms of reaction to the British colonial presence, as also new ways to express the modern, secular Indian identity it brought into being.

Contents

INTRODUCTION

The Fire by Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh

Taking Leave by Zahra Rai

The Steamer by Ram Kumar

The City of Death by Amarkant

Shammonjaan's Freedom by Krishna Sobti

Married Women by Mohan Rakesh

Apprehension by Kunwar Narain

The Guest by Nirmal Verma

The Funeral Procession by Shrikant Verma

The Color Blue by Vijay Chauhan

The Acquaintance by Ramnarayan
Shukla

The Homecoming by Usha Priyamvada

The Crowd by Vinod Kumar Shukla

Ba by Jyotsna Milan

The Festival by Mehrunnisa Parvez

Traffic Jam by Sanjeev

Paper Bullets by Abdul Bismillah

The Golden Waist Chain by Uday Prakash

Our Small World by Sara Rai

March, Ma and Sakura by Geentajali Shree

The Purgative by Alka Saraogi

Notes on Contributors

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/1048/4393/products/11929_5a201784-eeb5-41a1-a91e-ab062c868345.jpg?v=1625514195
11941-the-complete-stories-of-oscar-wilde
The Complete Stories of Oscar Wilde

Author: A Collection
Publisher: Jaico
Year: 2002
Language: English
Pages: 311
ISBN/UPC (if available): 812420070X

Description

This exclusive edition contains Oscar Wilde's complete stories and extracts from the picture of Dorian Gray, greeted on publication by a chorus of protest at its immoral subject matter

The volume gathers his delightful collection of fairy tales, the Happy Prince and Other Stories, and his witty sophisticated stories such as Lord Arthur Savile's Crime. A new bride's fantasy, the existential frustrations of a crusader's wife, the dilemma of a chic MBA in publicly recognizing her homespun parents, an aware-winning journalist who finds her campaign gone awry, a danseuse realizing that a Guru must do more than merely teach.. These are some of the experiences encountered by the protagonists in these stories. There is also a Rashomon-like tale of two women comparing husbands. These folk tales convey a sense of the traditional nomadic life and within them we can catch a glimpse of a nomad's friendships, enmities, and conflicts and can get a sense of his or her joys and sorrows.

Just as in folk tales everywhere, this collection includes many animal stories, tales of family strife and community division, disputes about morals and laws and encounters with magic and magic beings. These stories are governed by plots common to all folk tales: the rule of greedy kings is ended; wicked beings are punished, and usually the good are rewarded. One such tales, the final one in this collection, is entitled The Mare's Boy which narrates the story of an extraordinary youth, born from a mare, who eventually becomes king of the land by defeating the copper-beaked she-devil who threatens the health and prosperity of the community and by living in peace with those who had formerly hurt him.

This translation will give non-Tibetan readers a glimpse of Tibetan folk tales and keep these traditions alive for our study and our pleasure today and in the future.

Contents

Publisher's Note

Translator's Note

A Mother's Search
The Clever Boy and the Foolish Boy
The Yogi
The Lamb Who Went to Lhasa
Regret
A Rabbit Takes Revenge
The Goat-tail Thief
One Butter Lamp
Three Sisters and an Ogress
The Foolish Son Who Killed His Mother
The Greedy King and the Clever Boy
Blood from the Stone Lions' Eyes
The King's Decree
The Ewe and the Wolf
The Lotus Flower and the Cruel King
The Servant Boy Who Rose to the Throne
The Old Woman and the Wolf
The Cunning Rabbit
A Sheath of Tsampa
The Golden Vajra
The Rabbit and the Yeti
The Wise Ewe
The Shameless Boy
The Prince and the Yogi
The Gold and Silver Kneecaps
The Golden Hand Grinder
The Old Mother and the Sheep's Tail
The Mare's Boy

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/1048/4393/products/13850_0809f48d-3900-40e2-8dcc-f92afd9836e2.jpg?v=1625495505
13881-gendered-space-anthology-of-stories
Gendered Space - Anthology of Stories

Author: A Selection
Editor(s): Jehanara Wasi & Alka Tyagi
Publisher: Srishti
Year: 2004
Language: English
Pages: 219
ISBN/UPC (if available): 818857533X

Description

These stories, translated from stories written in major Indian languages, give us a glimpse into lives of our women, cutting through class and caste. Two occurrences in Maupassant youth, spent near Dieppe, France, scarred him for life. One was the seperation of his parents when he was 11 year old. Raised by his strong neurotic mother, Maupassant adored her, hated his father, despised all husbands, and remained a bachelor. The other was the discovery that he has syphilis, which he had either inherited or contracted. He claimed he was cured of it, but he wasn't, and in his later years it destroyed him. Living in Paris and studying law, he began to write, with his mother's friend Gustave Flaubert as his stern mentor.

Quitting law, Maupassant worked for ten years as a government clerk, mostly for the naval ministry. When he was 30, his first published short story, Boule de Suif, the story of a Rouen prostitute, caused a sensation, and three years later he published his first novel, Unne Vie, called by Leo Tolstoy the best French novel since Les Miserables. After that writing steadily, Maupasant became rich and famous, ultimately prossessing four dwellings and two yachts. He was a powerful man, able to row a boat fifty miles in a single day. But syphilis killed him in the end. He became ill, began to hallucinate, and tried to cut his throat. Committed to a Paris lunatic asylum, he died there at the age of 42 (on 6 July 1893).

Contents

Ball-of-Fat
The
